This is actually way sadder than one may think.
In the AMA, Bill says:

He’s lied himself into false happiness.
That doesn’t work. It’s just putting off the problem.
He smiles constantly in sock opera, because he feels like he needs to. It’s another part of his lie.
Happy people smile, right? Look at me, I’m smiling all the time, so I must be happy!
Happy people go out and party! Look at me, I’m having a party, so I must be happy, right?
Happy people are casual! Look at all these nicknames, look how casual I am!
Happy people don’t care about anyone or anything, look! I’m so happy!
