How on earth did this start? Nanu didn’t know. All he knew was that at some point during the year, a psyduck began appearing outside his station. It would be there once a week, by the lamppost, waiting to greet him when he stepped out into the rain. On seeing him, it would waddle over, always at the same pace. Never faster. Never slower. When it reached him, it would stretch out its arms, as if asking for a hug. It was a mystery where it came from. Other than the small population that inhabited Malie Garden, psyduck weren’t found on Ula’Ula. Had it wandered all the way over the mountain? Did it make the trip each week? Nanu didn’t know. All he knew was that it was a psyduck, and it wanted a hug. Nanu never obliged the little pokemon. He suspected that if he tried he wouldn’t be able to get back up again. So instead he too would stretch out his arm, and give its head a small pat. Then the psyduck would quack twice, turn around, and waddle away. It would never look back. Was it satisfied? Was it disappointed? Would it stop coming back once it got the hug it wanted? Nanu didn’t know.

All he knew was that he didn’t really want to find out.
